Buffalo Bicycle Vehicle of Choice for CareCar Ambulance in Malawi
World Bicycle Relief’s Buffalo Bicycle is now the vehicle of choice for Sakaramenta’s CareCar Bicycle Ambulance in Malawi. Sakaramenta, a social business based in Blantyre, Malawi, employs twenty local people to build a variety of carts to help people transport produce, sales items, people, and even garbage.
The CareCar is a bicycle ambulance developed to help bridge the distance between rural villages and health centers. For most rural people, the nearest clinic is 15 km (9.3 miles) from home on average--too far to walk for a woman in labor or a farm worker with a machete wound. Healthcare workers use the ambulance to transport pregnant women and ill or injured people. In the Carecar, the patient can recline comfortably, shaded from the sun and protected from dust and mud, while the caregiver pedals to the clinic. More than 700 CareCars are in use across Malawi--and now, the Buffalo Bicycle is the preferred form of pedal power.
Sakaramenta is World Bicycle Relief’s distribution partner in Malawi--people who already rely on the company for high quality, locally made carts can now purchase the Buffalo Bicycle too. Our partnership was finalized in October 2012, and Sakaramenta has already taken orders for more than 200 Buffalo Bicycles, many to be used with CareCars.
