Disaster Relief
Mobility = Relief
In 2005, F.K. Day and Leah Missbach Day traveled to Sri Lanka to find out how they could help after the devastating Indian Ocean Tsunami. During extensive interviews with key community leaders and non-governmental organizations, they learned that simple, sustainable transportation would be essential to rebuilding lives on the island; the couple founded World Bicycle Relief in response to this need. In partnership with aid organizations on the ground, they distributed more than 24,000 bicycles, reconnecting disaster survivors to their homes, jobs, schools, and markets through the Power of Bicycles. World Bicycle Relief has also provided bicycles to relief organizations working in Kenya to combat the 2011 famine in the Horn of Africa.
