INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY HISTORY

International Women’s Day has a long history in the West dating back to 1909. In 1975, the United Nations General Assembly made the holiday globally recognized by inviting member states to declare March 8 a day for women’s rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment. Since then, the UN has created an annual theme for International Women’s Day.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY THEME

In 2017, the United Nations’ International Women’s Day theme is #BeBoldForChange. Last year, leaders across the world pledged to take actions as heads of gender parity not only on International Women’s day but everyday. By 2030, the UN seeks to end poverty through the achievement of 17 goals under the 2030 Agenda. Some of these stand-alone goals in the Agenda are:

  • gender equality
  • challenge conscious and unconscious bias
  • empowerment of women and girls

Other key targets of the 2030 Agenda are to ensure inclusivity as well as quality education for girls and boys.

HOW TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

World Bicycle Relief’s education program has always focused on girls. 70% of students in our Bicycles for Educational Empowerment Program (BEEP) are girls. In developing regions of the world where distance is a challenge, our bicycles help girl students get to class on time, safe and ready to learn.

Girls in developing regions of the world face many challenges that prevent them from achieving their dreams. In Africa, girls have household chores and domestic responsibilities that they are expected to fulfill alongside schoolwork. Many girls have so many morning chores that they often cannot get to school or start their lessons on time. Distance to school is also a challenge as girls who walk long distances face more safety concerns along the route than boys.

Through a durable, rugged Buffalo Bicycle, both boys and girls have the opportunity to achieve a quality education by overcoming the challenge of distance in rural regions of the world.
