What an impactful May! Through your support, we reached monumental milestones and saw incredible turnout at the month’s biggest events. And most importantly, you made a difference in the lives of even more people for whom the gift of a simple bicycle can be life-changing.
Read on to see what you accomplished this May!
Mobilizing healthcare workers
With WBR’s Buffalo Bicycles, community healthcare workers (CHWs) in Africa are working to eliminate malaria; treat individuals with tuberculosis; teach positive health and nutrition practices; and visit more homebound patients.
CHW Ramadhan Bakari cares for 522 people across 105 households in Kakamega County, Western Kenya. He used to walk up to 8 km to see each patient and could visit only a few homes each day.
After receiving a Buffalo Bicycle, trips to patients’ homes became 10 minutes instead of an hour or more. Ramadhan, and other healthcare workers like him, can now visit up to 30 homes a day.
Another successful CycloFemme
The 7th annual CycloFemme event, which took place May 11-13, brought together cyclists for another successful year.Riders from cities spanning the globe – Denmark to El Salvador, Germany to South Africa – embraced the 2018 theme RIDE Together. RISE Together. And for the second straight year, CycloFemme partnered with World Bicycle Relief to support girl students in rural Zambia.
Thanks to the incredible CycloFemme and World Bicycle Relief communities this year, more than $23,000 will fund 158 Buffalo Bicycles.
inGamba’s $1 million milestone
Over the past five years, one of WBR’s most committed partners, inGamba tours, has helped rally its community around an annual ride in Mill Valley, Calif. On a recent Sunday, we celebrated a particularly exciting milestone of $1 million USD raised by this community for our programs.
At 2018’s Ride with João on May 20, inGamba founder João Correia spoke to the crowd as he presented a $25,000 check for The Power of Bicycles. He shared that what has made him most proud is that he’s been able to “10x” his impact, giving about $100,000 over the past five years. The inGamba community helped raise the other $900,000. That is pretty incredible!
400,000 bicycles in the field
With your help, we reached a new milestone: an astounding 400,000 Buffalo Bicycles distributed in Africa, Southeast Asia and South America since 2005.Each of the 400,000 Buffalo Bicycles now in the field, on average, impacts the lives of five people. That’s more than 2 million lives changed.
