This June, through our Racing the Sun campaign, World Bicycle Relief aimed to raise funds for 5,000 life-changing bicycles. And, thanks to the incredible efforts of our global community, we surpassed our goal – 5,027 bicycles for people in need in rural Africa.
Here are just a few of the events, partners and activations that helped to make an enormous impact:
Zwift and Saris
Zwift CEO Eric Min, along with Jordan Rapp, Kristin Armstrong and a thousand others on Zwift, gathered virtually June 2-3 for a series of Racing the Sun group rides. Zwift pledged to match the first $25K in donations raised! Saris kicked things off with a $5K gift. Huge thank you’s to Zwift and Saris and their dedicated communities!
On June 3, World Bicycle Relief celebrated the 2nd World Bicycle Day by sharing a real-time bicycle distribution in Zambia. Thanks to our incredible partner CitizenM, 124 students at Magoba Primary School have a new set of wheels!
Backroads provided 170 bicycles at the end of our campaign, providing an incredible incentive for our supporters to help us reach the finish line! In addition, Backroads donated 100 bikes to match our amazing fundraisers and help their efforts go twice as far. Thank you for your longtime support, Backroads!
For every 2,000 km ridden by UCI Cycling Club members on Strava on June 3, the UCI committed to donate a bicycle to a person in need through the Power of Bicycles. In all, UCI will donate 50 bicycles. Wow! Thank you, UCI!
As a special nod to the Racing the Sun theme, CUORE of Switzerland created a beautiful kit, highlighting a rider in the sunset. Amazing to see the great work and support from CUORE. In addition, riders that participated in the Zwift Racing the Sun event were able to secure this special kit in their arsenal for future rides, showing their support for the cause.
Deloitte employees across the U.S. participated in their annual Impact Day to support a variety of organizations nationally. More than 300 Deloitte employees chose to ride and raise funds to provide mobility for students. They raised more than 500 bicycles through this incredible effort. Thanks for creating #ImpactThatMatters, Deloitte!
Schwalbe donated 170 bicycles during our Racing the Sun campaign, offering an incentive for donors to contribute and have their gifts matched. Thank you, Schwalbe, for creating momentum during our campaign!
The Techbikers Germany team has done it again! A group of 40 tech professionals rode 450 km over 3 days from Island of Ruegen to Berlin to support the Power of Bicycles. This year, they flew past their goal of 65,000 Euros and raised more than 84,000 Euros! Thank you to the entire Techbikers community!
A dedicated group of supporters shared their daily races alongside that of Kenyan student Scholastica’s to highlight what 2 extra hours can accomplish each day. A huge thank you to Ruby Isaac, Tejay van Garderen, Chuck, Mirinda Carfrae, Anka Martin, Michael O’Brien, Laurens ten Dam, Sean Conway and Dan Lloyd!
Next Generation Ride Challenge by Rotary and Rotaract France and Germany
A committed team of Rotaractors and Rotarians from France and Germany organized an outstanding cycling experience to the International Rotary Convention in Hamburg. Two generations joined to ride their bicycles more than 835 km from Thionville, France, to Hamburg, Germany. Their goal is to raise funds to mobilize a school in Zambia and provide life-changing bicycles. A huge thank you to the Next Generation Ride Challenge team: You rock!
A New York Times best-selling author and avid cyclist, Sarah Wilson joined on as a World Bicycle Relief Australia ambassador last year and agreed to match all funds she raised. During our Racing the Sun campaign, Sarah and her community hit a milestone $45,000, bringing her total up to $60,000 for the Power of Bicycles! What an amazing impact!
And, of course, we couldn’t have done it without all of the other individuals and groups that came together for the Power of Bicycles. An enormous thank you to our incredible community of fundraisers and supporters. Your efforts will make a tremendous impact in the lives of more than 5,000 individuals!
