As COVID-19 began to spread quickly across the globe, it was clear that the communities World Bicycle Relief serves in rural Africa and Colombia would be extremely vulnerable.
Healthcare systems are overburdened, water and hygiene are often out of reach, clinics lack adequate equipment, and the distances to health facilities are often too far to travel on foot.
In response, we worked with partner organizations to ramp up existing health programming and increase bicycle distributions to health partners to frontline healthcare workers in Africa and Colombia.
On bicycles, health workers can raise awareness of COVID-19, care for patients with existing illnesses or provide preventative care, and deliver food, supplies and medication.
