Riding for the buckle – and the Power of Bicycles

Tackling the Colorado mountains in the Leadville 100 MTB, a grueling 104-mile mountain bike race, takes endurance and guts. And the five incredible Team WBR athletes on Aug. 11 not only accomplished their goals, they also raised more than $23,000 for the Power of Bicycles.

KATE GINSBACH AND SHARON SHACHAR

Kate Ginsbach hadn’t planned on riding the Leadville 100 this year when she didn’t get in through the lottery. But when a spot opened up, Kate jumped on the chance to overcome the distance with Sharon Shachar, who wanted to earn a belt buckle for finishing under 12 hours. At the end of the day, each earned their buckles, but the experience of racing together was the highlight of the day!

ERIC FOSSELL

Eric Fossell aimed to finish the course this year in 8 hours. Instead, Eric finished in 7:47 and was the 7th amateur overall! He reached out to his network to gain support for the race. To stay motivated, Eric even listed the names of all of his supporters on the frame of his bike! Thank you, Eric, for raising more than $3,000 for WBR!

ADAM SABAN

Adam Saban has been a member of Team WBR for several years. After moving to Colorado in 2016, Adam put Leadville on his bucket list for the year. His outreach for WBR doubled as training too: He climbed Golden’s Lookout Mountain 10 times to raise money and awareness for the Power of Bicycles. Adam had an amazing day on the course with his wife, mom, friend and even his dog.

RENEE LOCKEY

Renee Lockey joined WBR at Ride the Rockies, where she kicked off her fundraising. She carried it through the Leadville 100, where she vied for the coveted big belt buckle, “La Plata Grande,” for finishing under 9 hours. Renee hosted a pre-race dinner at her home in Leadville, and had friends and family from around the country out supporting her during the race. She finished in 8:46, earning her both the big belt buckle and 1st place in her age group! Plus, Renee raised an inspiring $10,000 for WBR to round out her accomplishments.

A huge thank you to all of the five Team WBR members that rode the Leadville 100 on behalf of WBR! What an amazing accomplishment to tackle in addition to helping others achieve their dreams.
