Things to do in the summer? Easy ways to go from fun to fundraiser

Summer is officially here (in the Northern Hemisphere), and there’s never been a better time to make an impact with World Bicycle Relief. Whether you are backyard barbecuing, pedaling around town, or training for an epic ride, you can transform your summer fun into fundraising. Not sure how? Look no further.

RIDE WITH US

Join us for the metric century of the summer on July 23rd! The Gran Fondo Hundo presented by Higher Gear is a scenic 62-mile ride from the Chicago suburbs up to historic Simmons Field in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Fundraise for WBR and get involved with our passionate community of riders, volunteers, families, and friends in the Chicago area. Did we mention that registration includes a post-ride hot shower, barbecue dinner, and Kenosha Kingfish baseball game? It doesn’t get much better than that. Register now.

Chicago doesn’t get to have all the fun! Here are some upcoming rides and events that may be near you:

Kaiser Permanente Seattle to Portland (STP), July 15-16, Seattle, Washington
London to Paris, July 20-23, London, United Kingdom
Ride London 100, July 30, London, United Kingdom
Pedal the Peninsula, Saturday, September 9th, Palo Alto, California
Not seeing a ride near you? Start your own or join a local ride. Make it meaningful by fundraising for WBR.

BARBECUE FOR THE CAUSE

You don’t have to ride a bike to support our mission. Transform your summer barbecue or pool party into an event for change by fundraising for WBR.

Are your pool parties usually BYOB? Consider switching to ‘BYODonation’ for a night or charging a small cover to benefit WBR. Instead of asking guests to bring an appetizer or dessert, ask for a donation to WBR. Save your guests some hassle and give your barbecue more impact. $5-$10 for a day packed with pool games, great food and even better company— there’ll be a line down the block.

You can learn from Baker Bill and use your summer grilling skills or lemonade stand savvy to make an impact. Baker Bill uses his annual bake sale to fundraise for WBR. Each year, his baking skills get better and the donations keep climbing. From selling fresh bread and homemade cinnamon rolls, he has raised $10,000 since 2010! Bill has not only fundraised 76 bicycles, he has also created an event to bring together his local community.

TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE

Planning a summer vacation? There is no better way to explore a new place than from the seat of a bicycle. Find a local bike tour and see the sights. We promise you’ll be amazed by how well you can get to know a city by pedaling through it.

While enjoying your vacation, you can provide that same joy and empowerment of riding a bicycle to students like Priscah. Before receiving her Buffalo Bicycle, Priscah would wake at 5:00 am to walk the 8 km to school in time for class at 7:00 am. Now, her bike supports her whole family by ferrying three siblings to school, transporting produce to market, and accessing healthcare.

If you’re more interested in exploring a city on foot, track your steps to see how far you’ve walked each day. How does it compare to the distance Priscah had to walk to school every day? Donate a bicycle to a student and share with friends and family how your vacation inspired your commitment to The Power of Bicycles.

GET ACTIVE & GIVE BACK

Planning to get active outside this summer? Join Team WBR to make your activity more impactful. Whether you cycle, swim, run, ski, or surf, athletes of all stripes are welcome to join.

BEAT THE HEAT WITH ZWIFT

Join Zwift, a digital destination for the global cycling community, and ride with WBR. Team WBR is the lead group ride event organizer on Zwift with over 30 events to choose from every week. There is always an opportunity to join group rides and have a great workout with fellow WBR supporters.

You can put meaning behind your pedal strokes by fundraising. Track your rides on Zwift or connect with Team WBR on Strava to include your outdoor cycling. Pledge your miles to provide more bicycles for students, healthcare workers, and entrepreneurs.

If empowering people through the power of bicycles and summer fun weren’t motivation enough, our July fundraising prizes can help! Get a taste of what’s in store for our top fundraisers this month by checking out the sweet swag headed to the winners of our May contest here.
