Expanding Our Impact: Why We Launched in Tanzania

Starting operations in a new country is never a decision we make lightly. Each expansion is the result of careful research, strategic collaboration, and a deep understanding of how our bicycles can help address critical challenges in a community.

Our recent launch in Tanzania was years in the making, driven by a pressing need for reliable transportation, particularly in the healthcare sector. The challenges Tanzanians face in accessing essential services reinforced the urgency of our mission: to help individuals and communities overcome the barrier of distance.

A Critical Gap in Healthcare

Access to healthcare is a significant challenge in Tanzania, particularly in rural areas where nearly 70% of healthcare positions remain unfilled. Many healthcare workers must travel long distances—often on foot—to reach patients, making it difficult to provide consistent and timely care. This reality has serious consequences for maternal health, vaccination rates, and the management of chronic illnesses.

Recognizing this, the Tanzanian Ministry of Health sought innovative solutions to bridge the transportation gap. Given our proven success in equipping frontline health workers with bicycles, they turned to World Bicycle Relief for support. Our durable, purpose-built Buffalo Bicycles provide a simple yet transformative solution, empowering healthcare workers to reach more patients in less time. With bicycles, they can serve up to 63% more households, extending essential care to the farthest corners of their communities.

Beyond Healthcare: Expanding Opportunities

While our initial focus in Tanzania has been healthcare, our commitment doesn’t stop there. Reliable transportation also plays a critical role in education and economic empowerment. Many students in rural areas face long, exhausting walks to school, which impacts attendance and academic performance. Similarly, small business owners and farmers struggle to transport goods efficiently, limiting their economic potential.

That’s why we’re also working to provide bicycles to students and entrepreneurs, enabling them to pursue education and build livelihoods with greater independence and mobility. A single bicycle can dramatically change the trajectory of a student’s education or help an entrepreneur expand their business, reinforcing the long-term benefits of mobility.

Over the next three years, we aim to mobilize 45,000 Tanzanians by providing Buffalo Bicycles that enable access to essential services.

As we continue our work in Tanzania, we are grateful for the partnerships and supporters who make this expansion possible. With every bicycle distributed, we are not just providing transportation—we are unlocking opportunity, improving access to essential services, and strengthening communities.
