The communities World Bicycle Relief serves live in challenging rural environments where distance, poverty and lack of transportation options are constant barriers to accessing education, healthcare and economic opportunity. Our specially designed, locally assembled, rugged Buffalo Bicycle has proven to be a simple, sustainable solution to the challenge of distance. 

To support the execution of our programs, every contribution of $165 helps provide and sustain a Buffalo Bicycle for those who need it most. This represents the actual expenses for manufacturing, shipping, assembly and distribution of our bicycles across the regions where we work – the costs for which have been on the rise in recent years.

To conquer the rough terrain and conditions where we operate, our team of engineers continues to iterate on our core bicycle design. The Buffalo Bicycle is considerably stronger, more durable and more reliable than when we started our work 15 years ago.

Collaborating with communities on programs, training field mechanics, creating a supply chain of spare parts, innovating product development, and measuring program impact  all contribute to our commitment to continuous improvement for building a sustainable bicycle infrastructure.

Over the years, we’ve made a number of improvements to the Buffalo Bicycle and our distribution based on feedback from end-users and monitoring of our existing programs, including:

• Continued adjustments to the bicycle design; handbrakes that withstand the elements; puncture-resistant tires; and rear-rack carrying capacity of 100 kg
• Deeper investment in monitoring and evaluation to improve our programs and share our findings
• Putting communities at the center of their own bicycle programming, which, paired with our sustainable bicycle ecosystem, empowers them to improve their access to education, livelihoods and well-being.

In addition to enhancements to the bicycle itself, World Bicycle Relief has expanded its reach. We have assembly facilities in Colombia, Kenya, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe that serve as hubs to support our growing programs and supply chain.
