Every update to our new bikes was made with one goal: building a bicycle that lasts longer, carries more and is easier to maintain in some of the world’s toughest riding conditions. 

But we didn’t do it alone.

Guided by feedback from riders, mechanics, communities, and partners, World Bicycle Relief’s product development team has spent nearly two decades refining every aspect of the bicycle – making thoughtful adjustments, testing new solutions, and improving performance while staying true to what matters most.

Jackton, a business owner in Kenya who has been test riding Buffalo Bicycles for more than 15 years, had this to say about his experience: “The bicycles I started using are still running and operational. At first, there were bicycles that required a lot of energy, but as time has gone by, the improvements have made them more comfortable to use. The newer models don’t require as much effort, so I can work for longer hours each day without getting tired. I’ve managed to expand my business because the bicycles have enabled me to reach more customers, which has tremendously increased my revenue.”

Every change responds to what we’ve learned through thousands of miles of testing and real-world use.

Because for us, innovation isn’t about adding more. It’s about making every part of the bicycle work harder for the people who rely on it.

The Buffalo One and Buffalo Pro aren’t new bicycles. They’re better Buffalo Bicycles—built on everything we’ve learned and ready for the miles ahead.

Riders do not all have the same needs. They travel across different terrain, carry different loads and come in a range of heights and body types.

Offering the Buffalo One and Buffalo Pro in Standard and Large frame sizes allows World Bicycle Relief and our partners to better match bicycles to their riders. This is an evolution from a one-size, one-model approach toward greater rider choice, comfort and utility.

Models are allocated primarily according to community needs and the objectives of the implementing partner.

For example, a partner may purchase a combination of Buffalo Ones and Buffalo Pros from Buffalo Bicycles Ltd. based on the terrain recipients travel, the loads they carry and the level of gear flexibility they need. Riders in hillier areas or those regularly carrying heavier loads may benefit from the Buffalo Pro’s two-speed drivetrain, while the Buffalo One may be the best tool for other riders and environments.

The Buffalo Bicycle has never been a static product. For more than 20 years, World Bicycle Relief has learned from riders, mechanics, communities and partners about what works – and what could work better.

The Buffalo One and Buffalo Pro reflect that continued process of listening, testing and refinement. The goal was not simply to introduce something new, but to give more riders the best possible tool for the journeys and work their lives require.

Disc brakes offer more consistent braking performance and power, particularly in demanding conditions and when riders are carrying substantial loads. They also reduce wear on the wheel rim, supporting the bicycle’s long-term durability.

The Buffalo One pairs a front disc brake with a rear coaster brake, while the Buffalo Pro has disc brakes at both the front and rear.

A donation of $185 represents the current cost of mobilizing a rider with a purpose-built Buffalo Bicycle, but it cannot be designated for a particular model or individual bicycle.

Donations support World Bicycle Relief’s work more broadly and are used where they are needed most. 

The representative cost of mobilizing a rider with a Buffalo Bicycle is increasing to $185. This reflects both improvements to the bicycle and changes in the costs associated with producing and delivering our mobility solutions.

This amount is not intended to represent only the manufacturing price of one model. It helps communicate the cost of providing a purpose-built bicycle within broader structures that may include delivery, training, maintenance support and other activities needed to create lasting impact.

Regardless of the model, all versions of the Buffalo are compatible with the same parts – something our product development team has prioritized across any updates to the bicycle. Brakes, drivetrains, wheels, and accessories – available through the retail shops operated by Buffalo Bicycles Ltd. – all fit the various models, extending the bike’s time on the road.

The Pro and One use different rear hubs, so changing a drivetrain requires rebuilding the rear wheel. However, the frames will accept any drivetrain and brake.  

Only the frame, fork, and top of the carrier are size-specific; everything else is interchangeable.
